Is It Whisky or Whiskey? Why the “E” Matters (and When It Doesn’t)
Ever spotted that little “E” sneaking its way into whiskey and wondered who invited it? You’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get when people visit the distillery — and honestly, it’s a fair one. So let’s clear the barrel fog once and for all.
Whisky vs Whiskey: The Short Answer
That extra E comes down to geography.
Whisky (no E) is the spelling traditionally used in Scotland, Canada, Japan, and Australia.
Whiskey (with an E) is preferred in Ireland and the United States.
Simple enough, right? Well, as with most good things in the world of spirits, there’s a little more nuance in the glass.
A Quick History Lesson (and a Touch of Rivalry)
Back in the 1800s, Irish distillers wanted to set themselves apart from the Scots — who were known for producing strong, smoky, peaty styles of whisky.
To highlight the lighter, smoother character of their spirit, the Irish added an E to their labels: whiskey.
When Irish immigrants took their craft (and spelling) to America, the tradition followed. The rest of the world, including Australia, stuck with the original Scottish spelling — whisky.
So… Which One’s “Right”?
Technically, both. But context matters.
If it’s made in Scotland or Australia, it’s whisky.
If it’s from Ireland or the US, it’s whiskey.
The spelling isn’t just grammar — it’s a nod to heritage, style, and method.
Where Beyond Stands
Here at Beyond Distilling, we proudly use the Scottish spelling — “whisky.”
Our BeStill program draws heavily from the Scottish tradition: grain-forward spirit, careful cuts, and a deep respect for the craft.
But like everything we do, it’s got a uniquely West Australian accent — local grain, South West water, and a climate that’s shaping our own distinctive style.
When the “E” Doesn’t Matter
Once it’s in your glass, the spelling fades into the background. What really matters is how it was made — the quality of the grain, the fermentation, the barrel, the patience.
Whether it’s whisky or whiskey, if it’s crafted with integrity and a sense of place, that’s something worth raising a glass to.
